Calling any young player the definite future of a national side is a statement of belief, not a guarantee. In Arjun Kumal’s case, though, that belief has a foundation: substantial innings at youth level, sustained domestic runs and, now, a place in Nepal’s ODI story. His rise is worth following because the evidence has accumulated across seasons.
The innings that made people look
At the 2024 Under-19 World Cup, Kumal scored 90 from 104 balls against New Zealand in East London. Nepal lost by 64 runs, but his innings gave the chase some resistance while wickets fell around him. The ICC’s report also records dropped chances. That detail matters: this was a young batter making the most of an opportunity, not a flawless performance that needs turning into a legend. Source ↗
The useful lesson is what an opener can do after surviving a difficult passage. Staying at the crease creates the possibility of a recovery. A ninety in a losing chase does not establish international greatness, but it gives a developing player something concrete to build on.
Domestic runs made the case stronger
The Kathmandu Post reported that Kumal led the 2025 Men’s PM Cup scoring with 374 runs in nine matches for Gandaki. In April 2026, he reached another landmark: 1,000 PM Cup runs, the fastest player to do so according to the newspaper. Against Koshi, his 102 from 141 balls helped rescue Gandaki from 60 for six; a 167-run stand with Bipin Khatri changed the innings. Source ↗
Those are the situations in which a top-order batter becomes valuable beyond a highlights reel. When a team is six wickets down, shot selection carries a different cost. Batting through the remaining overs can be as important as accelerating. The scorecard supports a case for Kumal’s patience and ability to construct an innings; it does not mean every slow start will be justified.
Learning to finish the job
Later in that 2026 campaign, Kumal made an unbeaten 103 against Lumbini as Gandaki won by eight wickets. Cricnepal reported it as his second century of the season. A rescue innings and a successful chase ask different things of a batter. Putting both on the record makes his domestic progress more persuasive than one isolated hundred. Source ↗
The next challenge is repetition against stronger attacks. Better bowlers will offer fewer release shots and test the same weakness for longer. Kumal’s task is to preserve the concentration that has brought him runs while finding ways to keep the scoreboard moving. That is a development target, not a claim that the work is already finished.
From prospect to ODI player
On 1 May 2026, Kumal became Nepal men’s 43rd ODI player, making his debut in Kirtipur during Cricket World Cup League 2. Cricnepal’s report connected that selection to a 504-run PM Cup campaign, including two centuries. By then, the discussion had moved beyond whether his domestic performances deserved attention: he had earned an international opportunity. Source ↗
An ODI cap changes the questions, not the difficulty of the job. Selection is followed by adjustment: a different standard of new-ball bowling, fewer loose deliveries and opponents who study a batter’s habits. A fair assessment should allow room for that adjustment while still asking for improvement.
Why Nepal should invest in him
The argument for Kumal is a cricketing one. An opener who can occupy the crease gives partners time to settle and provides a base from which an innings can grow. For a young batter, clear roles, regular high-quality competition and specific technical feedback are more useful than a new nickname after every good score.
That does not require declaring him suited to every format. Fifty-over batting and T20 batting reward some shared skills but demand different scoring decisions. Letting a player develop a strong role before expecting him to solve every problem is a sensible investment in both the individual and the side.
A future to build, not simply predict
The strongest reason to be optimistic is the sequence: an important youth World Cup innings, repeated domestic production, then an ODI debut. Each stage has given the next one substance. None makes the future certain, but together they explain why Kumal deserves sustained attention.
For CricPointer, “the definite future” is an expression of confidence in that trajectory. The fairer promise is smaller and more useful: keep watching the innings, judge the progress honestly, and give the player space to become more than the prediction. Arjun Kumal has earned that much.
