Nepal Premier League 2026 begins with a meeting between the competition's most recent champions and its most consistent league-stage team. Lumbini Lions face Sudurpaschim Royals at the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur on Monday, October 26, with the opening ball scheduled for 5:00 PM Nepal time.
The fixture is an immediate replay of the 2025 final. Lumbini return as defending champions after dismantling Sudurpaschim in that title match, while the Royals begin another campaign carrying the frustration of finishing first in the league stage—and then losing the final—in each of the first two NPL seasons.
Two very different measures of consistency
Sudurpaschim have set the standard across the league phase. They recorded six wins and one defeat in both 2024 and 2025, topping the standings each time. Lumbini's route has been less direct: they finished last in the inaugural season and qualified fourth in 2025 before beating Kathmandu Gorkhas, Biratnagar Kings and Sudurpaschim in three consecutive playoff matches.
That late surge means Rohit Paudel's Lions enter the opener on a five-match NPL winning run. Sudurpaschim, meanwhile, have won three of their last five completed games. The contrast is simple: the Royals have produced the stronger long-term league record, but Lumbini own the more valuable recent result and the sharper winning sequence.
Sudurpaschim lead the rivalry, Lumbini own the final
The Royals hold a 2–1 advantage from the three previous NPL meetings. They won by 45 runs in 2024 after posting 187 for 4, then chased 143 with seven wickets in hand during the 2025 league stage. Lumbini reversed the pattern in the final: Sudurpaschim were dismissed for 85 before the Lions reached their target in nine overs for a six-wicket victory.
That final was decided by Lumbini's bowling depth and a fearless chase. Ruben Trumpelmann and Sher Malla claimed three wickets each, Rohit completed a hat-trick, and Dinesh Adhikari struck 42 from only 13 deliveries. Sudurpaschim's first task in the rematch is to show that the collapse was an exception rather than a lasting weakness under knockout-style pressure.
Players to watch
Rohit remains central to Lumbini's balance. He led their 2025 batting with 276 runs and also collected ten wickets. D'Arcy Short supplied another 256 runs, while Sher Malla finished with 17 wickets at an economy rate of 6.50. Add Trumpelmann's left-arm pace and the Lions have several ways to control the middle and closing overs.
Sudurpaschim again look to captain Dipendra Singh Airee to connect their batting and bowling. Binod Bhandari was their leading run-scorer last season with 264, while Abinash Bohara matched Malla's 17-wicket tally. Their overseas group—featuring Brandon McMullen, Saif Zaib, Sherfane Rutherford and Scott Kuggeleijn—gives the Royals power, seam options and considerable flexibility.
Selection decisions
Neither playing XI had been confirmed when this preview was prepared. Teams may use no more than four overseas players, leaving Lumbini with a decision among Short, Niroshan Dickwella, Trumpelmann, Shamim Hossain and Shadley van Schalkwyk. Sudurpaschim's four announced overseas options create a more straightforward combination, although final availability and the balance of each XI will only become clear at the toss.
Pitch and conditions
Historical men's T20 data from the TU Ground points to an average first-innings score near 154, with chasing teams winning slightly more often than sides batting first. Spin has accounted for close to half the wickets at the venue, making control through the middle overs especially important. Clear, dry weather is expected, while increasing evening humidity may bring dew into the second innings and encourage the toss winner to consider bowling first.
CricPointer verdict
There is little between two well-rounded squads. Sudurpaschim's record across the previous league stages makes them difficult to dismiss, but Lumbini's five-match winning run and the authority of their final victory give the champions a narrow edge. The contest may turn on which side handles spin better in the middle overs—and whether Sudurpaschim can prevent Lumbini's lower order from changing the game as quickly as it did in the 2025 final.
